Bullets for New S. Korea Rifle Explode Over Target, Official Says
South Korea has developed a next-generation rifle using bullets that explode over enemy soldiers and scatter shrapnel, a military official said Nov. 20.
The new weapon will greatly enhance the combat capability of foot soldiers, said Shim Bong-Deug, a spokesman for the Defense Acquisition and Program Administration.
"The testing of the new rifle will be carried out next year," he told AFP.
It features laser-based aiming systems and bullets with special casings that maximize their power.
The rifle will be able to fire bullets that either explode over targets, penetrate the walls of buildings and blow up inside or explode near hidden targets.
Yonhap news agency said the new weapon marks a breakthrough in developing next-generation small arms.
