Udomchoke's campaign is over
by Bren O'Brien
Friday, 19 January, 2007
The final Asian player in the men's draw has bowed out on Day Five of Australian Open 2007, with Thailand's Danai Udomchoke's brave campaign brought to an end by rising Serbian star Novak Djokovic.
Udomchoke, who had beaten Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello and Spanish No.24 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero to get through to the final 32, fought hard against the teenage star, but succumbed in four sets, 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-1.
In a match played in high spirits, Udomchoke was rarely in command, but did have two break points on Djokovic's serve in the fifth game of the opening set. But the No.14 seed rallied to save them and then break the Thai in the eighth game on his way to claiming the first set.
A service slip-up by Udomchoke gave Djokovic the only break of the second set in the very first game, and while the world No.102 had a couple of chances to get back on serve, Djokovic served for a two-set lead in the tenth game. The Thai saved one set point, but an ace from the Serbian set-up another which he didn't squander.
The teenager sought medical treatment in the break between the sets, but while Djokovic may have dropped his first service game of the third, a pair of breaks on Udomchoke's serve had him set to cruise to a straight-sets win. He served for the match in the tenth game, only for the Thai to produce an excellent return of service game.
Udomchoke levelled the set at 5-5 with an excellent cross court shot, and having gained considerable momentum, he broke him again, claiming the set.
But any gains the Thai made in the see-sawing third set were erased when he dropped his serve in the third game. Another break in the fifth game had the match firmly in Djokivic's hands, and he didn't let it slip, sealing the result with his third break for the set, topped with a magnificent drop shot on match point, which left Udomchoke flat-footed
While his Australian Open campaign may have come to an end, Udomchoke, who also won a gold medal in the recent Asian Games in Qatar, is pleased with his efforts.
"I came here, I beat Ferrero, second round. Now I know I can have that good performance it makes me more confident. It's my goal, one day to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam," he said.
"Asian Games helped me get known with everyone, I was Asian gold medallist. Now I think here, in Melbourne was my highlight and I hope to do better."
"I'm very proud to be the last Asian in the men's singles. I can not say I am disappointed, because I played very tough opponent, he's No.14 in the world, and if I win I play Federer in the next round, so it's a very tough draw for me."
Udomchoke will now go to play challenger tournaments in South Africa in a bid to improve his ranking, and get a place in more main draws for Tour events.
"If I win, it's going to make my ranking 60 something," he said.
